Also don’t have any expectation to how long it should take her to be fully trained. I think you should work on potty training since that’s going to take a lot of work and it’ll be useful to have a house trained dog. A puppy takes 3-6 month to potty train sometimes so just because she’s 7 doesn’t mean she’ll learn faster.

You had me nodding and saying ‘yes, yes, yes!’ all the way through this article! I’m always elated when I see people being exposed to and grabbing the opportunity to change their training style from that alpha nonsense to science-based, force-free methods!

Good for you! You’ll soon see the options are endless! I have 2 German Shepherds and a Shepherd Collie cross. And all 3 of them are strong willed. but I’ve been using positive reinforcement for over 10 years now.

And yes, mine can be head-strong but sometimes we tend to forget that they’re intelligent and not robots. We need to show them why what we’d like them to do is so great. The Alpha method treats them like robots in a way. But positive reinforcement stimulates their mental agility and builds an unbelievable bond. Making things so much more fun and also easier.

Thanks for creating awareness around positive training!

I looked into hiring a trainer for Freya. I still might do it. She’s getting better since I changed tactics, but she’s definitely been our biggest challenge of all the dogs we’ve ever had.
